简介：The objective is that access is placed sufficiently early to enable the patient to train for PD in a timely fashion while residual renal function is sufficient to avoid the need for temporary vascular access for HD if there are problems with catheter function. It is not recommended that patients commencing PD have an arterio-venous fistula formed, unless there is a plan to transfer to HD within a few months or some clinical doubt regarding the viability of peritoneal dialysis in a given patient beyond a few months
